What happens to beautiful flowers after a wedding, celebration, or floral event ends? Too often, flowers that still have life and beauty left in them are discarded. Love Petals is changing that story by rescuing flowers, teaching community members the art of floral arranging, and transforming donated blooms into meaningful gifts for people throughout Hampton Roads.
WHRO News recently joined Love Petals founder and Master Florist Ivory Morgan-Burton during a community floral workshop to learn how the organization combines sustainability, creativity, education, and service.

A Mission Born From a Need
The idea behind Love Petals began when Ivory witnessed large quantities of flowers being discarded during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The flowers were no longer needed by wholesalers and event professionals, but many were still beautiful enough to be enjoyed. Rather than accepting that they would go to waste, Ivory felt called to do something.
“It wasn’t an idea. It just wound up being an obligation.”
That sense of responsibility became Love Petals—a community-centered organization committed to giving flowers a second life while using floral design to educate, inspire, and serve others.
Today, flowers that may otherwise be thrown away are repurposed into arrangements and shared with nursing homes, hospitals, senior centers, hospice facilities, and other community care organizations.
Where Sustainability Meets Creativity
Love Petals workshops offer volunteers the opportunity to learn basic floral-design techniques while creating arrangements in their own individual styles.
Ivory provides professional guidance, but she also encourages every participant to express their personality through their work.
“It’s their love. It’s their creativity that I want to showcase.”
No two arrangements are exactly alike. Each one reflects the time, care, and creativity of the person who made it.
For some volunteers, the workshop is their first experience arranging flowers. For others, it is an opportunity to strengthen their skills, meet new people, and participate in a meaningful service project.
Regardless of experience level, everyone contributes to the same purpose: creating something beautiful for someone else.
Delivering More Than Flowers
The arrangements created during Love Petals workshops are more than decorations. They are reminders that someone is thinking about the recipient.
For individuals living in care facilities, recovering in hospitals, receiving hospice services, or experiencing an otherwise difficult season, a floral arrangement can provide comfort, encouragement, and a moment of unexpected joy.
Love Petals volunteer Carmen Payton shared the personal impact of participating in the mission:
“Knowing that I made somebody else happy makes me feel good.”
That feeling is at the heart of every Love Petals workshop. Volunteers leave knowing that the arrangement they created will soon bring color, beauty, and kindness into another person’s life.
Building a More Sustainable Hampton Roads
The floral and event industries produce a significant amount of organic waste. Flowers may only be used for a few hours during an event before being discarded, even when they remain in good condition.
Love Petals creates a bridge between businesses with usable flowers and community members who can benefit from them.
By rescuing and repurposing flowers, Love Petals helps extend the usable life of fresh flowers, reduce floral waste, provide hands-on floral education, create meaningful volunteer opportunities, support local hospitals and care facilities, and deliver encouragement to members of the community.
